Participants will travel by bus to Lame Deer. Both in the past and today, plants provide food, medicine and ceremonial tools for local tribes in Montana. Plant knowledge and relationships can provide a valuable foundation for meting the requirements of Indian Education for All. Drawing plants provides a unique opportunity for Art teachers and instructional coaches to meet content standards. Teachers will meet at Senior High in the morning. We will then travel by bus to Lame Deer (Northern Cheyenne Reservation). Teachers will receive instruction on the bus about rough drafts and a lesson on plants that can be taught in art and science classrooms. We will first go to Linwood Tallbull's house where he will teach us about Northern Cheyenne plant knowledge and his personal and tribal relationships with plants. We will travel to the powwow grounds to eat lunch and learn about powwows. We will then travel to Deer Medicine Rock where Walter will provide historical context for the petroglyphs carved into the rock from Sitting Bull's Sun Dance Vision, which is later interpreted as a premonition for the Battle of the Little Bighorn. All throughout the day teachers will use an art Journal to draw various plants, events from the day and historical notes using charcoal and or colored pencils. Participants will also collect plants throughout the day that can be used for other projects. Teachers from all content and grade levels will find this beneficial to not only building background knowledge of local tribal history but best practices for teaching Indian Education for All in their classrooms.
