Educators will demonstrate understanding of who multilingual learners (MLs) are and other names for them, understanding of how MLs are identified in our district, and an understanding of laws that govern how we educate MLs in our schools. Educators will also have opportunities to learn about specific MLs in their classroom and investigate the English Language Proficiency Plans, accommodations/modifications and goals for the MLs in their classes. Educators will explore the idea of "Academic" Language--defining it, identifying its components and communicating the academic language to their students regardless of content area. Educators will also receive some strategies, scaffolds and supports from WIDA, including Can Do Descriptors--Key Uses that will increase the academic success of all students, including Multilingual Learners. By incorporating these strategies and scaffolds, English Language Learners will be able to have equitable access to their classrooms and should have the opportunity to score proficient on classroom based assessments.
