It is important to understand the longstanding history that has brought us to reside on this land, and to seek to understand your place within that history. Land acknowledgments do not exist in a past tense, or historical context: colonialism is a current ongoing process, and we need to build our mindfulness of our present participation. Participants in this course will gain insight into and define Land Acknowledgement and understand how land acknowledgements can help connect people to ecosystems and one another in both past and present. Teachers will also learn how land acknowledgements can be utilized across the curriculum for engaging students through culturally responsive teaching practice.
